Steampunk World's Fair

clock May 26, 2012 09:51 by author Amber

Last week I got to visit the Steampunk World's Fair, a festival that celebrates steampunk in all of its forms and I had a grand time.

Sadly, a lot of steampunk tends to be brown, as if they were part of a sepia tone photo or something. Sometimes they go for a full color spread and those are just gorgeous.

Cherries von Pinn

Copyright 2010, Stopped Motion Photography. www.stopped-motion.comLast weekend was SteamCon 2, a gathering of steampunk affectionados who on the whole are a lovely collections of nerds, geeks, and other assorted cool people. Really, this is genre in fandom with a flair for Science! (Note the capital S and the exclamation point.) While steampunks come in many different shapes, sizes, and ages--my youngest counts herself amongst their numbers--they all share the same sense of the visually amazing. Let me show you one such cool person.

She goes by the moniker Cherries Jubilee amongst the local Steamrats and even does dance classes with a distinctly steampunk flare to it. What's not to like? Perhaps if you're Agatha Heterodyne and you're trying to stay out of the way of Madame von Pinn you may not care for her. Now when Cherries came to me asked for a quick photoshoot to capture the von Pinn inspired costume how could I say no? Besides, silly ideas to present themselves from time to time. What could be sillier than a construct like von Pinn contemplating the day with a glass of wine? [more]

Into the Weird Weird West of Fashion!

Last October, I shot photos of the SteamCon Tea and Couture Fashion Show. I had a lot of fun taking the photos. You can view all of the photos here.

A couple of weeks ago, I was approached by the coordinator of the SteamCon 2 fashion show asking if I'd be interested in doing it all over again. It would be an understated to say I agreed to do it again. No, this year, I have ideas on how to improve the lighting and get even better shots than some of the awesome ones below. To celebrate this occassion, here are some photo's from last year's fasion show, Tea and Couture.

SteamCon this year will be November 19th to the 21st at the SeaTac Marriot and Hilton. For more information, check our the official website at www.steamcon.org.

Photos from the Seattle Steampunk Film Festival

Raffle sales were one of many fundraising aspects to the Seattle Steampunk Film Festival. On May 8th, 2010, a large collection of steampunks descended on the Museum Of History And Industry (MOHAI) in Seattle, Washington, with the sole purpose of raising funds to help fix the Carrols Clock. On December 26th, 2009, vandals stole the clock's inner workings and brass pendulum. Initial estimates placed the repair work for the 97 year old clock at $10,000.

Ericka sent an e-mail to the Seattle Steamrats Google Group detailing the results of these efforts:[more]

I'm overwhelmed by the success of this Saturday's fund raisers, Steampunk University and the Seattle Steampunk Film Festival.  It all started on *this* discussion group with the first post about the clockwork theft back in late Dec.  And we all stepped up as a community to make this fund raiser happen.

I am so grateful to our big donors: Steamcon, Studio Foglio, Renovation SciFi Convention, and Steambaby.  But I'm also blown away at the number of smaller donations that poured out from so many!  We never imaged we'd have so many goodies for our silent auction  It really touched my heart to see how people just stepped up to chip in (and dress up for a party!)  And to all of the volunteers.  So many people helping out on so many levels.  And we did it!  We raised enough to restore the clock!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Oh, and the folks at MOHAI love you too!  The exact subject line of the email we got this morning was "THANK YOU!!!!! I heart Steampunk!"

from MOHAI's fund raising coordinator.  I think we've left a mark on the museum in more ways than one.  (They know carry Boneshaker in their gift shop.)

Here are more photos from the photobooth.
